WYNDMERE — A $10,000 donation from local businessman and farmer Terry Goerger has helped move the Wyndmere Senior Citizens Club closer to its goal of constructing a new senior center for the community.
The fundraising campaign has now reached approximately 85% of its goal, according to club president Judy Swanson. The effort to replace the current senior center began after club members realized the aging building required extensive repairs.

"We needed a new roof, and it would have cost us $35,000 just to get that fixed, and that was only the beginning of our problems," Swanson said.

The current building, constructed in 1938, has experienced ongoing water issues. Swanson said water would enter the building during heavy rain and spring snowmelt despite attempts to address the problem with new gutters and eavestroughs.

"We realized that putting a new roof on was just the beginning of what we needed to fix in the building," she said.

The idea for a new facility gained momentum after the club sought funding for roof repairs and was encouraged to consider whether investing in the aging structure was the best long-term solution.

"I've been blessed to have had a good farming career and a good seed business career. I want to give back to those communities that supported me. I think small towns need a place to meet. Seniors utilize their current facility a lot, and my understanding is this could be a meeting place for other organizations in the community. It's a plus for a community to have a center like that."
